Bringing Colorado Into My Stained Glass Designs
/Quick answer: Colorado stained glass designs draw on what we see every day here: the Front Range, aspens, columbines, sunsets and big blue skies. I'm Steve Downing of The Glass Master in Thornton, CO, and I love translating that scenery into custom glass for homes across the Denver metro. Call me at (303) 457-1886 to design your own piece of Colorado.
Why I Keep Coming Back to Colorado
I've worked just north of Denver for a long time, and the landscape never gets old. On a clear morning you can see the mountains from all over the metro. The light here is bright, clear and constantly changing, and stained glass is all about light. It makes sense that so many clients want a little Colorado in their windows.
How I Approach Colorado Stained Glass Designs
Simplify
A real mountain view has endless detail. Glass needs bold shapes, so I start with the big forms: the ridgeline, the sky, the foreground. Then I decide which details really matter.
Let the Glass Do the Work
I choose glass with movement and streaks for skies and water, wispy textures for clouds and mottled glass for foliage. The right sheet of glass can say "sunset" on its own.
Use My Signature Technique
Leaded lines give strength to big shapes like mountains. Copper foil lets me add fine details, like aspen leaves or wildflower petals, that give a piece its painted look.
Design for the Opening
A landscape in a tall stairwell window reads differently from one in a wide transom, so I shape the composition to fit the space.
Colorado Motifs I Love
- Mountain stained glass: the Front Range silhouette and layered ridges in blues and purples
- Aspen stained glass: white trunks and golden fall leaves, one of my favorite subjects
- Columbines: our state flower, in soft blue and white
- Sunrises and sunsets in oranges, golds and deep reds
- Wildlife like elk, hummingbirds and trout
- Prairie and wildflowers from the plains east of the metro
Where Colorado Landscape Stained Glass Works Best
Front doors and sidelights, stairwell windows, transoms, bathroom windows, fireplace screens and hanging panels all suit landscape designs. See examples in the windows gallery.
Making It Personal
A design gets personal when it starts with a place that matters to you: a favorite peak, a trail, a cabin. I'll ask questions, share sketches and refine until it feels like your Colorado. I founded The Glass Master in 1989, and every piece I make is custom.
